Position and climate Stone has definitely characteristic type of Dalmatian coastline. Many channels, bays, beaches and small islands that will surely leave you breathless. The area is under the influence of seismic activity because it is located in the Dubrovnik region where sometimes occurs periodic internal distress. The entire area is surrounded by sea, whose temperature in summer goes up to 22-26 degrees. The color is dark blue to sea green and transparency along the coast is up to 5 meters. Salinity is extremely high, reaching even 38 per thousand, especially in the Ston channel. Because of strong currents, in some places the water level can be up to 2 meters.



The sea is of great importance to the residents of Stone (shellfish waters, catch fish, salt, tourism ...). Climate in Ston is typically Mediterranean, which means long, warm summers, mild winters and short ... Vegetation is also considered as Mediterranean where are predominant Dalmatian pine, herbs and vines.

History of Ston:

 At the entrance to the Peljesac Peninsula, lies a Big and Small Ston. History of Ston dates from the Neolithic period up through the ancient times to today. Its perfect location, connecting the peninsula of Peljesac with the mainland, rich fertile fields and their salt was inviting people to live here trough the ancient times. History of Ston is extremely rich, I will mention only some of the most important information that will surely draw the attention of every tourist on holidays in Ston.



Apart from the rich monumental remains of Roman, you'll notice Du-field (village Stagnum), in translation - dead water, the main feature of this site, which tells us that in ancient times here were lagoons of salt. Ston has experiencing a great civil struggle in year 1250, wich led to great destructions.In the 14th century brothers Branivojević usurp Ston, and the constant robberies and attacking of area of Dubrovnik, forced Dubrovnikans to fight back, and with the help of Bosnian Ban Kotromanić, succeed. But in new clashes between Serbian and Bosnian king, Ston again falls down in hands of Serbian king. In 1333, Dubrovnik republic purchased Ston and kept it until their feel down.

 In year 1334, Dubrovnik starting with the construction of a monumental defensive system, they invested heavily, and some great builders were engaged in the biggest project of that time. The walls are 5.5 km long, with 40 towers and 5 forts is certainly the largest civil engineering project of that time in Europe. Ston walls were damaged in earthquakes and in the second world war they were under Germans and Italians, adjusted for their needs. In 2009 walls were open for their visitors, having two entrances and one exit. Walls are recommended to any tourist on holidays in Ston. Apart from the walls which have a great importance for Ston, we also need to mention Salterns. In terms of economy of Ston, Salt had and still has great significance for this area. Besides having the oldest saltworks in Europe, it is bringing highest earnings of nearly 16 000 ducats a year. Besides these two the most important characteristic of Ston we need to mention also Napoleon Road and Cave Gudnja.



Tourism of Ston:

 In recent times, tourism of Ston is getting stronger and more people are turning to this branch of industry. Tourists that are visiting Ston are usually stationed there, but also because they want to explore rural, sporting and recreational side of this area. In regards to these summer sports we would reccomend to visit north side of peninsula Pelješac, villages Brijesta, Duba Ston, Mali Ston and others. In southern part of peninsula Peljesac we advise visiting Žuljana and small vilagges Prapratno and Przina.

Gastronomy of Ston area (Oysters) First to mention oysters and their cultivation, which dates from the 16th century. The first major company begin to grow in the 20th century when Ston oysters receives the Grand Prix and a gold medal at the 1936 world competition. Today it is cultivated around 500 000 pieces. The most delicious are in March and they are eaten open with a little lemon juice, and you can try the restaurants in Little and Big of Ston.

Ston has a manifestation of pride and GAST (Oyster Festival), where you can experience oysters prepared in many ways as possible. It is best to eat them with the Peljesac wine. Due to its position peninsula and the Mediterranean climate, Peljesac vineyards are giving one of the best wines of the region. Ston is a very interesting place as any in the Dubrovnik region for a tour by bicycle, because you can see and stop at the desired location. Certainly recommend cyclists to enjoy his favorite recreation. With tour cycling recommend walking and hiking on the nearby hill of St. John. Diving, either you decide to just visit or to stay in Ston, diving into the Adriatic Sea is a unique experience. Green, red and brown seaweed, corals, sponges on rocks in the sea depths of Ston. A tiny fishes with beautiful colors and light making its own show in translucent blue sea will leave you breathless.
